How good your camera , when use one of this mode : Program Mode, Priority Shutter or Priority Aperture, camera will do mistake within measure lighting condition from one photo object. Like article about metering sistem, camera have tend to bring a photo object close to 18% grey color . This is the time for you to use exposure compensation.

Exposure compensation is the way to command the camera to let more / less the lights which is come into lens to  apart from lightmeter measurement.

How to beat the weakness of Metering System of Camera
The weakness of metering system on camera that bring all object to 18 grey , it means that photo object which is dominated by white color of camera will little bit darken tend to grey, thus overall photo become uder expsosed. Meanwhile the object photo that dominated by black color will be brighten tend to grey ,thus overall photo become over exposed.

With exposure compensation we can bringing back the under or over exposed photo before where the white color will comeback be white and black color come back looks black. Look at sample photo bellow, the white color on snow will make camera shoot under-exposed photo, therefore need compensation in amount of +2/3 Ev (+2/3 stop) to make snow back to looks in white color.

 Without Exposure Compensation
Sample Photo bellow was produced by aperture priority mode and without doing exposure compensation. Because many  photo objects have black color, then camera will brighten it all automatically and produce over-exposed photo ,thus the black color becoming like grey.

With Exposure Compensation -1Ev (1 stop)
Because in this case above camera produce photo that is too bright, so we do exposure compensation , when we set on -1EV position the result is like this:

With exposure Compensation -2EV (-2 Stop)
How if we want to shoot low kwy photo that tend to more dark? We can darken that photo with set the exposure compensation in -2EV ( decrease 2 stop), look at the result:
