White Balance , For What?
Everyone who have digital camera at least ever found
the photography term of white balance. So what the white balance is? Why we must
need to know?
Allright, lets figure out with simply.
Understanding white Balance
White balance is important aspect in photography world and
take effect on final photo result. The reason why we need to understand about
white balance is because we want the color of our photo is accurate. So, white
balance take effect toward photo color.
Let’s see the pictures bellow :

There are 3 identic photos, moreover they are from one
photo. I just change white balance setting and the result : They are different
in colors. Photo A looks so deep blue, photo B looks normal color and Photo C
looks so yellows.
Look at the light color of neon and bulb lamp,
it’s different. It because each neon and bulb lamp have different color
temperature. The yellow light (bulb) called warm , meanwhile the blue light
(neon) called cold.
The reason why camera need white balance setting is
because we shoot in the fluctuate
lighting conditions. Our naked eyes are the super advanced tool and capable to
adaptation (balancing) toward the changing of light colors, so the white paper
in everywhere will looks white for us. But the camera isn’t so advanced like our eyes, because the white paper isn’t always looks so white for camera in different lighting colors.
Therefore the purpose of white balance setting is to
command camera to recognize temperature of the light source that is available.
In order to make white looks like white, red looks like red and green looks
like green, or with the other words so
that camera records object colors accurately in any lighting condition.
White Balance Preset
You can also use preset if it’s available on your
camera:
- Auto - Camera will guess the color temperature based program that planted originally from camera maker. You can use it on many situations, but not every situation ( for example : shoot when sunset/sunrise)
- Tungsten – symbolized by bulb icon. Because it’s suitable to use when you shoot in the room with the bulb light as the source light.
- Fluorescent – Symbolized with neon lamp icon, use it when you shot in the room with the neon light as the source light.
- Daylight – usually simbolized by the sun icon, use it when you are under the sun light.
- Cloudy – symbolized by cloud icon,use it when you want to shoot in cloudy weather
- Flash – symbolized by tunder, if you want to use flash lamp ( strobe), you should use this preset
- Shade – usually symbolized by house or tree, use this preset in the house (noon) or when you are in shade area- not direct sun light.
How to Set the White Balance Manually?
So, the camera especially SLR and prosumer giving
fasilities white balance manually. Manual setting is the most accurate way if we
confuse with the color temperature from
our light source. Usually it happen in photoshoot when lighting source is more
complex ( more than one type of colors temperature)
We can utilize white paper for this purpose. This
