Literally, Shutter speed is the range of times when shutter in your camera was opened. To make it simple, shutter speed is the times when camera censor capture the subject that we would take. Simply, Shutter Speed is the times between when we click the shutter button in camera untill the button back to the  position at first.

To make it easy, we can apply this concept in using of camera:
  • When you set the shutter speed at number 500 on your camera , it means the times range is 1/500 seconds. Yes, as simple as that. Meanwhile,  for exposure times is 30 seconds, you will see this words like this : 30”
  • Usually Shutter Speed Setting in your camera is multiple by 2, So we can see the row numbers like this : 1/500, 1/250, 1/125, 1/60, 1/30 & etc. Now almost most of camera also permitted 1/3 stop setting, so more or less the movement of shutter speed is more tight , they are : 1/500, 1/400, 1/320, 1/250, 1/200, 1/160, and etc.
  • To make depth/sharp pictures, you should using safe shutter speed. The safe rules in common condition is set the sutter speed on number 1/60 or faster, so pictures that was taken will sharp and safe from blurred/ unfocused. We can create this safe limit with tripod or using Image stabilization features.
  • The another limit of shutter speed is : The shutter Speed that we set , it have to more  than lenght of lens. So if we use 50mm lens, use the shutter minimum 1/60 seconds. If we use lens 17mm, use the shutter speed 1/30 seconds.
  • The  shutter speed technique to freezing the movement. Use shutter speed as high as possible that can reach to freeze the movement. As fast as object in move that we will freeze in pictures, it needs more fast  of shutter speed . For  example, To make picture of flying birds, choose the Shutter Priority mode and set the sutter speed in number 1/1000 seconds ( ideally set ISO in auto option) in order giving the depth/sharp photo result. If you pay attention , Sport Photographer  is very love this S/Tv mode.
  • Making Blurred- Shutter Speed technique to show movement efect. When me take picture of moving object, we can design with slowing down the shutter speed to show the movement effect. Please Making sure that in the frame including at least one motionless object as the anchor of that picture. Take a look this picture below :
